Retrace-AV is a combined anti-pathogenic additive and traceable verification system for addition to water-borne paint or varnish and recommended for interior use. It provides protection against the spread of a broad spectrum of bacteria and viruses.

It is recommended that Retrace-AV is added to paint or varnish for interior use on hard surfaces, which could benefit from an increased level of anti-pathogenic resistance. Always apply paint or varnish to clean and dry surfaces, free from dust, dirt or moisture. Please see the directions on your chosen paint or varnish for details of the surfaces it can be applied to.

Recommended sites for application:

  • Hospitals, medical and veterinary facilities
  • Care homes
  • Airports, seaports, transport and travel hubs
  • Schools, universities and nurseries
  • Stadiums, sport arenas and conference centres
  • Offices
  • Religious buildings

Recommended areas for application:

  • Entrance lobby
  • Check-in and reception areas
  • Turnstiles
  • Waiting rooms
  • Corridors
  • Communal areas
  • Lifts

Retrace-AV is recommended for interior use. If used on exterior surfaces it will potentially shorten the life of the anti-pathogenic efficacy. Not safe for human consumption and should not be applied to the skin, hair, food or animals. It should not be applied to clothing or fabrics.

Retrace-AV is a contact anti-pathogen and begins to kill bacteria and viruses as soon as they contact the coated surface. The biocide present in Retrace-AV actively destroys gram-positive bacteria, gram-negative bacteria, enveloped viruses, non-enveloped viruses and fungi through a myriad of mechanisms not limited to: damage to the structure of the organism; functional change of proteins; inhibition of replication and organism DNA/RNA damage, all preventing further infection. To maintain efficacy, the surface should be undamaged and kept clean from grease and dirt.

The anti-pathogenic protection will remain active for many years (tested under ISO 11607 for 10 years) before requiring a recoat. Testing verified to the leading international standards. The efficacy should be verified annually by a registered service provider: contact contactus@retraceav.com for details.

Retrace-AV is effective against bacteria and viruses and has long term efficacy. Most other anti-pathogens are delivered in the form of gels, wipes or liquid cleaners and require constant reapplication to remain effective.

UL is a global scientific research organisation that helps the world’s best brands earn trust by testing and verifying marketing claims in order to help them make safer, more secure and more sustainable products.

The UL Verified Mark is a distinctive way to differentiate your brand and its marketing claim. It starts with the basic UL Verified Mark and includes two important modules.

The UL marketing claim Verification process is based on rigorous, repeatable and independent assessments: Protocol Development – identify the right approach to determine the accuracy of any claim; Claim Testing & Evaluation – with scientific rigour, thoroughly evaluate the validity of each claim.

Testing of Retrace-AV has been verified by UL to the leading international standards; Unique Identifier: V176873. Visit verify.UL.com for details.

Verify Mark Anatomy Diagram

All testing has been undertaken in a controlled laboratory environment on a surface coated with a suitable water-based paint, which has been pre-mixed with Retrace-AV in the stipulated 40:1 ratio and in accordance with the specified usage instructions.

Retrace-AV has been tested to the leading international standards listed below by ISO 17025:2017 accredited commercial, university and medical laboratories.

ISO 21702:2019 ‘Measurement of antiviral activity on plastics and other non-porous surfaces.’ LEARN MORE >

ISO 22196:2011 ‘Measurement of antibacterial activity on plastics and other non-porous surfaces.’ LEARN MORE >

ISO 11607:2020 ‘Accelerated Aging of Sterile Barrier Systems for Medical Devices.’ LEARN MORE >

The testing confirms Retrace-AV meets virucidal and bacterial efficacy standards.

Efficacy against SARS-Cov-2 has also been verified by UL (Unique Identifier: V176873) – visit verify.UL.com for details.

Every pack contains a sticker (pictured here) to be completed by the painter/decorator and applied to the coated surface. This confirms that the surface coating has Retrace-AV included, along with the date of application, to ensure users working in or visiting the space feel safe and protected. It remains the responsibility of the painter/decorator to comply with the usage instructions detailed on the pack to ensure the stated efficacy of the coated surface.

Surface Protected with Retrace Image

Coated surfaces can be scanned in situ by Retrace AV Limited or one of their approved service providers. It is recommended that this is done annually to confirm the continued efficacy of the coating. For walls, floors and ceilings, one surface analysis should be conducted for each 10m2 in low wear/use areas and for each 2m2 in high wear/use areas. For work surfaces, desks, etc. receiving frequent contact, a minimum two surface analyses should be conducted per item and at least two surface analyses per 1m2 surface area.

Yes, all products are owned or licensed by Retrace Group Limited.

There are decorative antibacterial paints available. These are often limited to white emulsion for walls, so consumers do not have a choice of colours or for different surface types. These paints do not address viruses or enable use on multiple surface types. Also, all antimicrobial cleaning products, gels, sprays or wipes could be considered but all require regular preventative or post-infection application and should be viewed as complementary to a coating containing Retrace-AV.

Cleaning and disinfecting are key to maintaining a safe environment. If a facility relies on cleaning and disinfecting as their sole infection control measure, they should be following recommended guidance as defined by such government agencies as the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, USA (CDC) or Public Health England, UK (PHE). Prior to implementing an appropriate protocol, it is first imperative to understand the differences between cleaning and disinfecting. The following statements published by the CDC clearly outline this below.

“Cleaning physically removes and reduces germs, dirt and impurities from surfaces or objects by using detergent and water.”

“Disinfecting kills (or inactivates) germs on surfaces or objects by using chemicals, as directed, after they have been properly cleaned.”

Correct protocols must then be implemented conscientiously to ensure an effective routine which cleans (removing dirt) and disinfects (killing germs by following the specified dilution, application and contact time detailed by the manufacturer).

Public Health England states that for cleaning in non-healthcare settings outside of the home “As a minimum, frequently touched surfaces should be wiped down twice a day, with at least one of these at the beginning or end of the working day.”

Paint or varnish containing Retrace-AV is complementary to any cleaning and disinfecting routine as it is constantly active, destroying infectious pathogens which touch its surface. This actively and continuously reduces the risk of opportunistic infections in the built environment.

Retrace-AV should be added to paint or varnish in a 1:40 ratio, e.g. one 25ml bottle should be added to 1L of paint/varnish. Stir thoroughly with a powered paint mixer or shaker for 5 minutes before use and stir regularly during use. Mixing should ensure complete dispersion.

Refer to your chosen paint or varnish for application instructions and drying times. Retrace-AV is a contact anti-pathogen and is therefore only effective in the top/final coat. The coating should be fully dry before allowing contact by humans or animals.

The biocidal effect begins when the product is fully dry and remains active provided the surface is kept free from contaminants and the coating is maintained.

No, but the paint or varnish you add it to may have an odour and you should follow PPE (personal protective equipment) instructions for that product.

Retrace-AV is available in 25ml bottles for addition to 1L water-based paint or varnish.

Yes, the box, bottle and lid are all fully recyclable - please check local by-laws in your country or region.
